Accidents, Injuries, and Spiritual Awakening
Last week, a client asked me some great questions about the connection between accidents, injuries, and intuitive, psychic, and energy healing gifts.
Below are her questions and my (cleaned up) responses…
I was wondering…You’re not the only person I know who has had a traumatic injury lead to the opening of your gifts! Why do you think the injury and the opening of gifts is related?? Could we avoid the injury and move forward into allowing free communication with our guides, angels, and higher self?
I, too, have met many others who have experienced trauma (emotional or physical) that has opened them to new gifts or an acceptance of gifts they had previously rejected.
Jack Rourke, in his book The Rational Psychic*, discusses how people with abusive or neglectful childhoods are often highly sensitive, empathic, read energy well, and can accurately predict how people will respond since they needed those skills to survive. In other words, the trauma of their childhood allowed the development of their gifts.
It seems to me, that these capacities are available to all people, but under certain conditions – sometimes traumatic conditions – they are integrated and flourish.
I believe these capacities lie within us from birth as a blueprint of our most evolved self. If infants and children are allowed to follow their curiosity and evolve this blueprint, I believe these capacities would strengthen organically and simply be a part of who they are. Joseph Chilton Pearce wrote about this in his book The Biology of Transcendence*.
If you want to build these skills, here are some resources:

Do you think that we have trouble allowing and that we need a catalyst to open up?
I do think adults have more challenges with allowing this process than children. As adults, we have been socialized to believe that we need to be in control of just about everything. Moving through an awakening process is about letting go of control. It helps to develop a practice that strengthens our faith (in ourselves and the Universe) and our capacity to move through liminal space.
I think most adults do need a catalyst to open. Some catalysts include:
Psychological breakdown/breakthrough.
A chemical journey – mushrooms (psilocybin), MDMA, Ketamine, Ayahuasca, etc.
A consistent spiritual practice – meditation, shamanic practices, etc.
A physical injury.
In the Vedic tradition, it’s our work to unleash the kundalini energy at the base of the spine and allow it to flow freely up and down the spine. This is considered a spiritual awakening. There are known stages, points where people tend to get stuck, and ways to move through them with more ease and less suffering.
Even if one uses meditation and other intentional practices to awaken the kundalini (as opposed to being whacked upside the head to unleash it), it is a difficult experience.
We are thrown into liminal space over and over as the brain is rewired. We shed ways of being and patterns of thinking we’ve come to rely on. At times, it feels like you’re losing everything you’ve ever known, going crazy, or stuck in a liminal space that you’ll never emerge from.
Moving through the spiritual growth and personal development required of a kundalini awakening is intense, vulnerable, transformative work. The integration of a life’s work, not a quick fix. I resonated with Adyashanti’s discussion about this process in The End of Your World*. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras* offered me much guidance. I prefer Iyengar’s translation, but there are many others.
Emilah’s Example
In my case, the head injury allowed the neural pathways to be “broken” and then heal in a different pattern. Several healers have noticed that my brain function is different from a typical brain. Instead of operating in a bi-lateral way, it operates more like an infinity symbol.
A friend recently noticed that when I am teaching and coaching, my crown and third eye chakras merge to produce a focused and integrated flow of information – a mix of my own knowledge and information I am channeling.
I can tell when that merging kicks in – it’s a very specific sensation in my brain. I suspect it’s a gift from the head injury as I don’t recall that sensation before the accident.
Generally, I think head injuries have this “breaking the neuropathways” effect, but people don’t always take the hint. When we have a head injury, so much is uncertain, we naturally grasp for normal instead of softening into curiosity about what new might emerge. In doing this, we can miss the opportunity for expansion.
There’s an old saying “the crack is where the light gets in”. For better or worse, I find this to be true with injuries!
